Smithfield Street Bridge Years Constructed: 1881-83 Years Widened: 1891, 1911 Type of Span: Lenticular Truss Total Length: 1,184ft Height of Deck: 42.5ft Engineer: Gustav Lindenthal Stanley L. Roush designed the portals c. 1915 . . This is the third bridge to cross the Mon on this site. The first bridge was constructed by Lewis Wernwag in 1818 but was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1845. The second bridge was constructed by John A. Roebling in 1846. (Yes, that John Roebling). Currently, the Smithfield Street Bridge is the oldest surviving river bridge in Allegheny County.
